Why the PS5 Pro WILL NOT Happen

Is a PS5 Pro on the Horizon?

The gaming world is buzzing with rumors of a PS5 Pro, but could this powerful console upgrade actually be a reality in this generation? While whispers of its existence have intensified, I personally find it unlikely. Here’s why:

The PS4 Pro Precedent

To understand the current situation, we need to look back at the PS4 Pro. It was launched in the middle of the third year of the PS4’s lifespan, offering enhanced graphics and performance. However, this timing aligns with a typical 5-6 year console cycle. We’re now in year four of the PS5 generation, and a Pro release so late in the cycle wouldn’t offer much value. By the time it potentially launches, the next console could be just around the corner.

The PS5’s Current Capabilities

Unlike the PS4, which initially struggled to deliver consistent 1080p60 gaming, the PS5 is already capable of producing high-quality graphics and smooth gameplay. The need for a Pro upgrade to achieve these goals is simply not there. The PS5 is more than capable of delivering the experience most gamers desire.

The Cross-Generation Dilemma

We’re currently in a cross-generational period where console exclusivity is a significant factor. With a limited number of PS5-exclusive titles available, is it worth investing in a Pro variant when a new console generation could be closer than we think? There’s a risk of duplicating content across both platforms, potentially diluting the value proposition of a Pro release.

Sony’s Stance

Sony has publicly downplayed potential PS5 Pro sales projections, hinting at a shift in focus towards the next console generation. This strategy aligns with past behavior, with the PS5 release following a similar pattern after the PS4 Pro’s life cycle. It seems like Sony is gearing up for something bigger, potentially the PS6 in the following two years.

The Hardware Focus

I believe the PS5 is already where it needs to be in terms of hardware. The release of a digital edition allowed for a more affordable option, further expanding the reach of the console. The key focus should be on expanding game libraries and delivering PS5-exclusive experiences that truly set the platform apart.

The Verdict

While a PS5 Pro isn’t entirely out of the question, I personally find it highly unlikely. The timing, the PS5’s current capabilities, and Sony’s trajectory point towards a new console generation within the next couple of years. The focus should be on delivering a rich library of PS5-exclusive games that truly leverage the platform’s power.

What’s Next?

The future of PlayStation is exciting. With a new console generation potentially on the horizon, the focus should be on innovative technologies and groundbreaking gaming experiences. The PS5 has laid a solid foundation, and I’m eager to see what Sony has in store next.
