Sprint and LG Working Together to Bring First 5G Smartphone to the U.S. in First Half 2019
Sprint & LG are working together to be the first to launch a 5G phone and network in the US. 5G is the next evolution in mobile networks. LG & Sprint claim that the phone will be capable of downloading full-length HD movies in just a few seconds, watch heavy graphic videos and play high-speed games with zero lag. They expect the phone to be available in the first half of 2019.
“LG has been working side-by-side with Sprint for nearly 20 years, and we are looking forward to expanding this partnership with 5G,” said William Cho, LG Electronics North America President, and CEO. Building on LG’s legacy of innovation, our teams are enthusiastic about partnering with Sprint’s 5G experts to bring next-generation mobile to market in the U.S., while continuing to evolve LG’s best-in-class design elements for Sprint customers.”
The partnership between Spring and LG come at an interesting time with Sprint’s proposed merger with T-Mobile still waiting to be approved by regulators. T-Mobile also isn’t just sitting around waiting for the yes on the merger as they are also developing and testing 5G technology later this year along with Verizon and AT&T separately.
It looks like wireless carriers are all pushing at the same time to get to 5G and not waiting behind like with 4G LTE where Verizon got the head start with others follow behind to catch up. We will most likely see a lot of hotspots at first with the capability to test out the networks before we see more smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops add the capabilities. But with this partnership between LG and Sprint, we may see both of them win the race to first in the US.
