Gaming PC Upgrades For 2024

Upgrade Your PC Without a Full Rebuild

It’s that time of year again – you’re probably looking at your PC, contemplating upgrades. You built it a couple of years back, and while you’re not ready for a complete platform overhaul, you want some components that will give your system a significant boost. You want to get more value and longevity out of what you already have. I’m here to offer four specific component upgrades that I’ve personally implemented and highly recommend.

1. A Powerful Graphics Card: Unleash the Potential

First up, the GPU. I recently upgraded from the 30 series to the 40 series, specifically the 4070 Ti, and more specifically, the ASUS ProArt 470 Ti OC Edition. I chose this card because I’m both a gamer and a content creator, and I need a powerful GPU to handle both. The 4070 Ti excels at gaming, offering top-tier performance on all levels. But, it’s the 12 GB of VRAM and dual encoders that make it a true powerhouse for video editing and content creation.

This card is also surprisingly quiet, thanks to its triple-fan setup. It has a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic that avoids being overly flashy or gamer-centric. However, it comes with a higher price tag, around $849 when I bought it. If you’re primarily focused on gaming, there are more budget-friendly options available that can save you about $100. However, if you can afford it, a powerful GPU like the 4070 Ti is a top recommendation for a significant performance upgrade.

2. Gen 4 NVMe SSD: Faster Loading and Improved Responsiveness

Next on the list is storage, specifically upgrading to a Gen 4 NVMe SSD. Prices for these drives have dropped dramatically. When I initially built my system, Gen 3 drives were the more affordable option. Now, Gen 4 offers a noticeable performance improvement, especially for boot times, loading speeds, and overall system responsiveness.

I’m using Kingston’s K3000 NVMe SSDs – a 1 TB drive for my boot drive and a 2 TB drive for storage. I also have a Samsung 980 Pro that I transferred from my PS5. The leap from Gen 3 to Gen 4 is evident in the noticeable speed increase. It’s one of the most impactful upgrades I’ve made this year.

3. High-Speed DDR4 RAM: Enhance Stability and Performance

Another essential upgrade is your RAM. I upgraded to Kingston’s Renegade DDR4 RGB memory, a 64 GB kit with a speed of 3600 MHz. My previous RAM kit experienced occasional stability issues, but this Renegade kit has been flawless from the start. The RGB functionality is also much better, providing more control and consistency.

DDR4 RAM prices have also come down considerably, so if you’re on a DDR4 platform, consider upgrading from 32 GB to 64 GB, or opting for a faster kit. While DDR5 is available, it represents a full platform upgrade. For those on DDR4, take advantage of the current prices and improve your RAM.

4. CPU Upgrade: Unlock More Power

Finally, consider upgrading your CPU. I’m currently using an AMD AM4 platform, and I originally purchased a Ryzen 9 5900X. However, based on performance benchmarks, I decided to step down to the Ryzen 9 5900X, which has been an exceptional CPU. With its 12 cores and 24 threads, it’s a true powerhouse for both gaming and content creation. It’s possible you might not require a CPU this powerful, but even the 5950X is still a viable option.

To go further, the top-tier Ryzen 9 series processors on the AM4 platform offer a significant performance boost. If your motherboard supports it, a BIOS update might be all you need for this upgrade. Consider a higher-end Ryzen 7 or 9 to gain a notable speed increase.

The Essence of Upgrades: Enhancing Performance and Lifespan

The goal of these upgrades isn’t to completely rebuild your PC but to improve its performance and extend its lifespan. With prices for these components at a favorable point, now is the perfect time to invest in upgrades. Remember, this is just a starting point – let me know in the comments what upgrades you’d recommend. These recommendations cater to gamers and content creators, striking a balance between both. What are your thoughts? Let’s discuss!
