I'm A PC Gamer and I can't wait for the next gen consoles!

Since this is my first article for this site, I feel that I should explain who I am before getting into my reasoning. I am a 26-year-old PC gamer, and have been primarily gaming on PCs since Quake 2 came out, desperately trying to connect to any server that would have me on my 56k connection.

In terms of the kind of PC gamer I am, I would say that I am “that guy.” I will always say that a keyboard and mouse is the best controller, and will always moan and groan when you tell me you purchased the latest Call of Duty title for your Xbox or PS3. Playing first person shooters with thumb sticks is like trying to hit a home run with a broken piece of plywood. It just doesn’t work. That being said, I absolutely cannot wait for new consoles to come out. Why?

Graphics Are All Dated

The Xbox 360 and PS3 are pretty long in the tooth as far as hardware goes, and although it’s impressive to see what developers can still do with the hardware they are still severely limited by it. The cores in my current PC processor are taking turns napping and my video card is now in a coma because of developers holding back to make their titles multi-platform. There have been a few exceptions recently (Skyrim, Battlefield 3), but even those 2 aren’t really pushing the envelope.

New Control Methods

Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of consoles. That being said, I’ve always wanted to use my precious keyboard and mouse and play Halo, Resistance, or whatever other console exclusive shooter is out. Yes, I am completely aware that there are products that allow you to do this, but I really think that it should be a native thing. Screw balance. There are ranking systems now. Let the people who want to play with controllers hover in the low levels while the people who want to seriously play get up to the intermediate/expert levels. Will this ever happen? Probably not. But one can dream.

Consoles ARE Better for Some Things

When I want to play competitively, which is most of the time, I’ll boot up my PC. If I want to sit back and relax and maybe take some story in, I’ll boot up my 360 or PS3. Cinematic storylines are a better experience on a console than on a PC mainly because of my home theatre setup. Bigger screen, bigger speakers, more to take in. While you CAN do this with a PC, it just doesn’t feel the same to me.

Although I am a PC gamer, I am realistic. I know that consoles are the future and that they do bring in a lot more revenue than PC games. Whether or not I will be able to keep using my keyboard and mouse for years to come will be up to the gaming industry.

Nintendo drops the ball the first half of the fiscal year in the sum of $923 Million.

Nintendo in the past was a money-making machine with the Wii and the Nintendo DS but times have been rough for the Big N with them losing a reported $923 million the first half of the this fiscal year. You can point the blame to many things with the extremely weak Nintendo 3DS sales resulting in a price drop and we discussed where 3DS failed in its launch, the low Wii hardware and software sales with it near its end-of-life cycle and the terrible reception the Wii U received when it was announced.

Nintendo is also projecting to lose another $264 Million going into the end of this fiscal year in March 2012. Not a good time now for Nintendo. They hope to try to stop the bleed with their heavy hitter titles for the Wii and 3DS coming this holiday 2011 that make also pick up some hardware sales. This does put pressure on Nintendo to fix sales of the Nintendo 3DS and hit a homerun with the Wii U by convincing the masses that the product will indeed work and will bring new innovated games to the platform.

Want some extra battery life out of your 3DS? Check out Hyperkin 3DS Power Plus Battery Review.

Battery life has been one of the major grips about the Nintendo 3DS. Many that have buy one wish they had the same battery life they had on the Nintendo DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL. Hyperkin is looking to solve this with the 3DS Power Plus extended battery.

Hardware & Design

The extended battery connects to the bottom of the 3DS so you won’t have to open anything on your 3DS. Its made of solid plastic with a soft touch coat finish for comfortable grip. The battery gives an extra grip to the device and is comfortable to hold. The small hump on top may bother some but it was fine for me. There is a LED battery indicator which lights up with pressing the button below it. The battery charges up via the mini USB port on the back and the cable is included. There is a switch next to USB port to switch from the internal battery to the Power Plus battery. I would suggest to use up the internal battery first then turn on the Battery Power Plus and get to a point in your game to save because it gets hot right where the extended battery connects to the 3DS if your playing a game at the same time.

Performance

Now for performance I’m not going to throw a whole bunch of statistics and a chart at you because those numbers usually don’t apply to every case. I’m going to give you real world usage with is a lot of stop and go play, using various features and utilizing the sleep mode for StreepPass. With just the standard battery you can get about 1.5 days battery life with stop and go usage. With the Power Plus Extended Battery you can go 2.5 days. This is a mix of 3DS games, Netflix, DS games and web browsing. I will tell you though as a long time DS user that while you will see better battery life out of the Power Plus battery it will not give you the battery life that the original Nintendo DS series gives but you will see improvement.

Overall

The Hyperkin 3DS Power Plus Battery is good for those who are on the road and want to keep their gaming going. If you have a long daily commute this will come in handy. if you are a stop and go user this will also be great for you as well and at the price of about $24.99 MSRP it’s a good buy for any 3DS user.

NINTENDO GETS FIRED UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH NEW FLAME RED NINTENDO 3DS
New Color, New Price and Great Games Make Nintendo 3DS a Must-Have
REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 10, 2011 – Nintendo is making sure the holidays are hot this year with a new Flame Red version of its portable Nintendo 3DS™ system. The new color launches Sept. 9 alongside the new Star Fox 64™ 3D game, and comes on the heels of a new $169.99 suggested retail price, which goes into effect Aug. 12 in the United States. Flame Red joins Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue, so now shoppers have three distinct and fashionable colors to choose from.
“Nintendo 3DS is poised to be on fire for the holidays, with its new suggested retail price, great games and our new Flame Red color,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “With major upcoming releases in the Star Fox, Pokémon and Mario series, in addition to downloadable offerings from Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Video and Netflix, the system offers new and fun experiences to owners on a daily basis.”
On the software side, third-party developers have lined up to deliver great new experiences that make use of the unique features of Nintendo 3DS.
“Nintendo 3DS is an amazing piece of technology that offers players incredible 3D games without the need for special glasses. Beyond that, it’s an affordable dedicated gaming machine. Simply put, Nintendo 3DS is a fabulous device,” said Laurent Detoc, President, North America, Ubisoft. “Ubisoft has been a big supporter of Nintendo 3DS since the beginning with eight Nintendo 3DS games released to date and another eight games coming out before the end of calendar year 2011.”
Retailers are also anticipating a strong showing from Nintendo 3DS this holiday season.
“The new, lower Nintendo 3DS price combined with a hot new color and big-name games will entice even more Target guests to get their hands on this first-of-its-kind 3D gaming experience,” said Nik Nayar, vice president of Merchandising, Target.
“GameStop customers were excited about the Nintendo 3DS launch, and this lower price point should spark additional demand,” said GameStop President Tony Bartel. “With a solid back-half game lineup, the Nintendo 3DS price drop is well timed to drive consumer interest and purchases through the holiday season.”
Nintendo is planning the release of two upcoming games starring its famous hero, Mario™, this holiday season. Super Mario™ 3D Land will launch in November, while Mario Kart™ 7 becomes available in December. Super Mario 3D Land is a new platforming game that takes full advantage of 3D graphics to deliver new puzzles, more precise jumping action and a remarkable new visual perspective on the Mushroom Kingdom. The game also marks the return of Mario’s fan-favorite Tanooki Suit, which allows him to strike enemies with his tail and slowly descend after jumping. Mario Kart 7 is a new racing game that includes multiple characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, Kart customization and intense multiplayer action. Players can now race on land, sea and air, sail through the sky with the new hang glider feature and drive underwater in some stages. Both games are completely new and are designed specifically for the Nintendo 3DS system.
Since Nintendo 3DS launched in the United States on March 27, more than 830,000 units have been sold in the U.S. alone. Nintendo 3DS owners represent some of Nintendo’s most loyal customers, and Nintendo is rewarding them for getting in on the action early with 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop.
These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once or performs a system update before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:
1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.
2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy™ Advance Virtual Console games. These include games likeYoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

Nintendo drops the price of the 3DS to $169.99. A drastic cut as a results of many failures in its launch.

Nintendo drops the price of the 3DS to $169.99. A drastic cut as a results of many failures in its launch. Last week Nintendo made the blockbuster announcement of the price drop of the 3DS to $169.99 and 20 free games to who they call “3DS ambassadors” or current owners. This is a nice gesture and I commend Nintendo for doing this to easy the blow of the price cut to current users. I also want to give them props for the senior management in Nintendo taking pay cuts until the sales become strong. A move that RIM should lean with their double CEO but low level Job cutting mentality but I have already suggest what those guys should do to fix their issue. Nintendo is making the rights moves in getting better sales of the 3DS but needs to make sure they look back and learn from the many mistakes they made with the 3DS launch and I want to point out a few here that I feel are key.

One of the issues while some may feel it was the biggest I feel is a small but significant part of the problem is the price. The 3D console launch at $249.99 which many out there felt was just far too expensive for a portable gaming console. A lot of people feel that if its portable it must be cheaper and lower than what a full console cost. I’m not so much hung up on the price as I’m more on the fact that they didn’t do a good job in proving to people on why it was priced that way. This sort of leads into my second issue which is the marketing.

Marketing I felt was terrible for the launch of the console. I believe there was two commercials for it but the only one that I saw was focused on the only good launch title at the time (we’ll get into that one later) Super Street Fighter 4: 3D edition that really just pushed heavily on the 3D ability. Where is the story on the evolution of portable gaming. Nintendo who dominates this category should have shown their history of innovating this market starting with the original Game Boy line to the DS line and now 3D gaming on a portable platform with graphics that rival GameCube games. It’s really amazing when you sit back and think about how far we have come in gaming technology. Nintendo told none of this story.

Story is a big thing in marketing and can totally sell nearly any piece of technology regardless of the price. I like to use the example of the iPad. Now I’m not comparing the two but the iPad and tablets in general for the cost around the average price of $499 for what they really do isn’t necessarily that economically beneficial and not something that is a necessity in life but this is where Apple shines as they do their best to prove this to you. Look at all the commercials for the iPad. They show a kid using it, in a doctor’s office, in an office, etc. Each show how the tablet can fit into your life and a large part of the reason Apple is the leader in tablets now even with so many options and some that do more.

Another issue I would like to point out is the extremely weak launch titles and missing features at launch. There was only 1 game that really stood out amount the rest of the titles and it wasn’t even the strongest. All the good games got delayed and since they also didn’t include the eShop you were left with not much else to play other than your old DS games. Also missing in action at that time was the Internet browser, Netflix and Nintendo Video. With all that delays the system should have been delayed itself to come out with a stronger feature set and games which are coming this fall 2011.

While there are many more mistakes that just these, Nintendo is making the rights moves. The games are finally going to be here and with the new price should push those who have waited on the fence to finally drop the cash to get one. Senior management and executives taking full responsibility and cutting their pay is also a great move and shows they are willing to do what it takes to turn things around. I’m expecting that we will start to see better marketing for it too, which should tell that story they need to convince consumers that the 3DS is the way to go. I see good things in the future for Nintendo I’m just hoping they keep this up.

Nintendo Announced Today that the 3DS will drop to $169.99 starting August 12 and current owners will get 20 free games starting September 1. This price drop comes after sales were below expectation for the 3DS initial launch and with new top-tier titles coming they want to make sure people will be buying the consoles with them. Current owners Nintendo calls “3DS Ambassadors” will get 20 free games. 10 of which will be NES Virtual console games which they will have early access to before launch. Some of the games included will be Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. By the end of 2011 all 3DS ambassadors will get 10 free exclusive Game Boy Advance games that won’t be released to the public. Some of these games are Yoshi Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart and more.

I knew a price drop was going to come by the fall and at least $50 but I didn’t expect an $80 drop. Nintendo must want to prove to investors that the 3DS is a profitable platform and giving 20 free games for those who paid up the $250 to get it at launch is a great way to show appreciation to those users. Check out the press release below for more info and our 3DS videos.

The Nintendo eShop is a digital store for Nintendo 3DS owners that provides access to a wide variety of downloadable content, such as original 3D software, classic games that have been re-mastered in 3D called 3D Classics, Game Boy™ and Game Boy Color "Virtual Console" games in their original 2D glory, and more than 350 Nintendo DSiWare™ games. Visitors can also view video game trailers, screen shots and product information for games, including those available at retail locations.

Since Nintendo 3DS launched in the United States on March 27, more than 830,000 people in the U.S. alone have purchased one to enjoy 3D visuals without the need for special glasses. These Nintendo 3DS owners represent some of Nintendo’s most loyal customers, and Nintendo is rewarding them for getting in on the action early with 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop.
These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

More details about this program will be announced in the future.
Remember that Nintendo 3DS features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/3ds.
*Some features require a broadband Internet connection.
About Nintendo: The worldwide pioneer in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™ home console, Nintendo 3DS™ and Nintendo DS™ family of portable systems.
Let’s take a look at Netflix on the Nintendo 3DS that just got released today. Netflix on the 3DS was announced just before the release of the Nintendo 3DS console. Now it being 4 months since that announcement we have it available to download from the Nintendo eShop now for US customers only.

The app will download directly to your SD card and is free from the eShop. When you first open it up if you don’t have a Netflix account you will need to set one up but if you do it will give you an activation code that you will need to go into your account and type it in to activate it. One you have all that setup you will see the main menu which looks like other Netflix enable devices apps.

You will see all of your items in the instant queue and see the rest of the genre categories to choose from. Pressing the Y button will bring up the search that you will need to use the stylus to type in because the keyboard is very small. The search will try to find the content you’re looking for while you type it in. Tapping into any video title or pressing the A button will bring up information about the movie, ratings and its options to Play Now, Add to Instant Queue and if available Subtitles/Audio options and for TV shows More Episodes. If you don’t want to go through the menu you can just go to any video title and hit the X button and it will start streaming right away.

The video plays on the top screen while the bottom screen is blank until you tap it which pauses the movie and gives you the play time and time shift bar. Just side the bar over to the scene that you want to go to and hit play and to go back to the main menu just hit the B button or tap Back.

You can’t stream 3DS movies yet but certain parts of the App are 3D like the time shift bar and menu items. The app is a bit slow on loading thumbnails and search but updates should come to improve that. I would like to see Nintendo release an output cable of some sort to play Netflix on your TV while on the road. It would be great if it’s in HD but standard would be found as long as the ability is there. Also I would like to see them create some type of 3G or 4G card that could slide into the 3DS slot and able to connect on the go and you’re not near a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Nintendo eShop is a digital store for Nintendo 3DS owners that provides access to a wide variety of downloadable content, such as original 3D software, classic games that have been re-mastered in 3D called 3D Classics, Game Boy and Game Boy Color “Virtual Console” games in their original 2D glory, and more than 350 Nintendo DSiWare™ games. Visitors can also view video game trailers, screen shots and product information for games, including those available at retail locations.
Within the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo 3DS users will also be able to download the freePokédex 3D application and start collecting data for more than 150 Pokémon from thePokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon White Version games. This new application lets users view each Pokémon in 3D with animated motion and sound. The Pokémon image can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing users to zoom in and view it from any angle. The detailed Pokédex also allows users to search, sort and filter all of the data they receive in a variety of ways, making it the essential guide for Pokémon fans. Players can complete their Pokédex by sharing data with friends and using the SpotPass™ feature, or by scanning special Pokémon AR Markers (augmented-reality markers). Once users have received data for a Pokémon, the AR Viewer allows them to view that Pokémon image in a real-world setting in real time, and create photos to share with friends.
“The Nintendo 3DS system is constantly evolving and growing,” said Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The Nintendo eShop is a one-stop resource for a broad range of Nintendo information and downloadable games and applications. It expands the Nintendo 3DS experience with new and entertaining content.”
Other capabilities that go live with the system update include a free Internet browser that has the capability to show 3D images on sites specifically designed to show 3D images. The browser can also be used during game play. Users can stop their Nintendo 3DS game and go to the browser by pressing the Home button and then resume their game when they are finished browsing.
The system update also gives Nintendo DSi™ and Nintendo DSi XL™ system owners the ability to easily transfer most of their previously downloaded Nintendo DSiWare™ games to their new Nintendo 3DS systems.
In the near future, users will be able to download a free application for a short-form video service that will enable them to view specially selected video content, including 3D movie trailers, comedy clips and music videos automatically received when the SpotPass feature is activated.
To install the recommended system update, Nintendo 3DS users can simply start the “System Settings” from the Home Menu, select “Other Settings” and scroll the page right to select “System Update.”
Remember that the Nintendo 3DS system features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visithttp://www.nintendo3ds.com.
