Samsung has officially claimed the top spot for Android devices in the US in terms of total sales in the Q3 2010. Shipping 3 million android device so far and  in Q3 2009 they were 9.2 percent of the market and now claim just over 1/3 of the android market at 32.1 percent.  The success comes from the very popular and critically acclaimed Galaxy S series of android devices. Independent research from leading industry analyst firm shows Samsung captured

top spot in U.S. Android smartphone market in third quarter of 2010

DALLAS, December 3, 2010 — Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile)¹, the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S., today announced that third party research firm Gartner® reported Samsung as the top Android smartphone provider in terms of sell through to end users in the United States for the third quarter of 20102. According to Gartner, Samsung Mobile captured 32.1 percent of the U.S. Android smartphone market in Q3 2010 based on retail sales, an increase from 9.2 percent of the Android smartphone market in Q4 2009.

One of the most anticipated phones of 2009 is the Touch Pro 2 from HTC. With its combination of a screen near the size of the HTC Touch HD and full QWERTY keyboard the HTC Touch Pro 2 looks to be the best all around Windows Mobile phone out there.

UPDATE:  This review has been updated to include items that were not in the original review. This however does not change the final conclusion of the review.

The HTC Touch Pro 2 starts off great with its solid hardware. The look is great as its sleek with a nice weight to that gives you a great feel of quality. The keyboard is also great to type on and with the new layout that is similar to a desktop keyboard and each key spaced between each other. You develop a nice flow once you begin typing on it and actually find yourself to be more accurate and fast.

Hardware Pics

The 528 MHz processor in the phone makes the OS very snappy and responsive and with a 183MB of total of memory available for programs there is virtually no sluggishness. GPS is unlocked from the start and Google Maps and Bing Search both work with it out of the box. Google Maps currently is the faster of the two and also the phone now supports the Locate Me feature in Google Maps which finds your location via cell phone tower. The screen is bright and vibrant with a 480×800 resolution and 3.6 inch screen size that makes it much more finger friendly for the touch screen. Sound is also great on the phone especially with the 3.5mm headphone jack which makes it a much better multimedia phone. The speakerphone is full duplex and is probably the best speakerphone on any cell phone in the market. Overall the hardware is solid and one of the best offering from HTC.

On the software side the phone comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 but is upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5 which will be coming up later this year. Windows Mobile 6.1 is a great OS but is now starting to show its age in the last few years. While it has all the features that most current OS competitors have, the user interface and experience is dated and needs to be revamped. The beginnings of that improvement have been done with Windows Mobile 6.5, but for 6.1 Touch Flo 3D has stepped in and has made great UI improvements and adds some key improvements as you see in the video review one of the top things is Touch Flo 3D in landscape mode which makes getting around much easier. The full encompass of Touch Flo into the operating system makes it a joy to use and should help out the windows mobile newbie to learn the OS and will be a welcome addition to us veterans out there. Making everything more finger friendly makes using the larger screen a joy and you will use the stylus less and less.

Battery Life on the phone is pretty good considering all that it does. You will get an average battery life of about 1.5 – 2 days with average use. Heavy usage your looking at about 1 – 1.5 day charge and most likely you are going to want to grab the extended battery. Program memory is about 183MB and around 74MB of that is available from a fresh restart. It’s using a lot of that memory just to run the phone but you do have a good amount of it available to run programs and apps. What I wonder if how much are we going to gain/lose with the upgrade to windows mobile 6.5. The phone app has a new dialer with bigger buttons and easier access to contacts and call history. When in a phone call you get a good amount of options to choose from while you are in a call. The phone app is a definitely a great upgrade from the version on the Touch Pr o 1. Video looks great and I will be testing out more codecs and videos apps in the future to figure out the optimal resolution, app and file format to watch videos on the phone. Also youtube look phenomenal on it. Its very close to the quality of the iPhone’s youtube app. Teeter is a great game that is highly addictive and shows you how the accelerometer works.

While in a call the phone proximity sensor will help save battery life as it will shut off the screen during a call when the top part of the phone on the front is covered and when uncovered the screen will come back on again unlocked. The speakerphone is also solid as its very loud and clear and the best speakerphone I’ve used ever on a smartphone or really any phone for that matter. When looking at the back and taking the battery door off you can see the 1500MaH battery which gives you a charger of about 2 days with normal usage. Also on the right side is where the micro SD card is hidden (not shown in video) and the stylus while doesn’t have the magnetic snap that the Touch Pro 1 did does have a switch on the inside so when you pull it out the phone will turn on and be unlocked. The camera controls are all touch screen based and provide you with a good amount of options and the pictures look pretty good for a 3.2 Megapixel camera.

Overall HTC has done a great job with this phone and its one of the best Smartphone out there in the market. You can tell there has been a focus on the Touch Pro 2 to take the best elements from past HTC Devices and put them all in on device and they have done a solid job of that. If you are a fan of HTC device this will be great for you. If you’re fan of Windows Mobile this is probably the best phone out there (with Windows Mobile 6.1). If you are a fan of HTC and/or Windows Mobile this is the one to consider for your next upgrade. If you are new to Smartphone and shopping around looking at iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre or Nokia be sure to put the Touch Pro2 in your list of considerations.

Microsoft and yahoo have reached a 10 year search engine deal. The deal will allow Microsoft to use its new Bing! search services to power Yahoo! search while Yahoo will focus more on the web portal and other products of the business. 

This isn’t the total buyout Microsoft was looking for before but this does put the two even more closer to total marriage since they already share Instant Messaging.  Full article inside

Global Deal Creates Better Choice for Consumers and Advertisers

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash. — 29 July, 2009 — Yahoo! and Microsoft announced an agreement that will improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers, and deliver sustained innovation to the industry. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

For Web users and advertisers, this deal will accelerate the pace and breadth of innovation by combining both companies’ complementary strengths and search platforms into a market competitor with the scale to fuel sustained development in search and search advertising. Users will find what they care about faster and with more personal relevance. Microsoft’s competitive search platforms will lead to more value for advertisers, better results for web publishers, and increased innovation and efficiency across the Internet.

Under this agreement, Yahoo! will focus on its core business of providing consumers with great experiences with the world’s favorite online destinations and Web products.

The key terms of the agreement are as follows:

The term of the agreement is 10 years;

•

Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo!’s core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing web search platforms;

•

Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to use its technology and data in other areas of its business such as enhancing display advertising technology.

•

Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, and prices for all search ads will continue to be set by AdCenter’s automated auction process.

•

Each company will maintain its own separate display advertising business and sales force.

•

Yahoo! will innovate and “own” the user experience on Yahoo! properties, including the user experience for search, even though it will be powered by Microsoft technology.

•

Microsoft will compensate Yahoo! through a revenue sharing agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo!’s network of both owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites.

•

Microsoft will pay traffic acquisition costs (TAC) to Yahoo! at an initial rate of 88% of search revenue generated on Yahoo!’s O&O sites during the first 5 years of the agreement.

•

Yahoo! will continue to syndicate its existing search affiliate partnerships.

•

Microsoft will guarantee Yahoo!’s O&O revenue per search (RPS) in each country for the first 18 months following initial implementation in that country.

•

At full implementation (expected to occur within 24 months following regulatory approval), Yahoo! estimates, based on current levels of revenue and current operating expenses, that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual GAAP operating income of approximately $500 million and capital expenditure savings of approximately $200 million. Yahoo! also estimates that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual operating cash flow of approximately $275 million.

The agreement protects consumer privacy by limiting the data shared between the companies to the minimum necessary to operate and improve the combined search platform, and restricts the use of search data shared between the companies. The agreement maintains the industry-leading privacy practices that each company follows today.

The agreement does not cover each company’s web properties and products, email, instant messaging, display advertising, or any other aspect of the companies’ businesses. In those areas, the companies will continue to compete vigorously.

The transaction will be subject to regulatory review. The agreement entered into today anticipates that the parties will enter into more detailed definitive agreements prior to closing. Microsoft and Yahoo! expect the agreement to be closely reviewed by the industry and government regulators, and welcome questions. The companies are hopeful that closing can occur in early 2010.

(1)Gross profit impact consists of increased revenue net of Microsoft’s share of Yahoo!’s search revenue. The increased revenue is attributable to the scale resulting from the combination of the Yahoo! and Microsoft search marketplaces.

The iPhone with probably the chunkiest names out of all of has launched today in US Store and online.  There has been lines outside of stores waiting to purchase the new iPhone will which come with the new iPhone 3.0 OS automatically.

The new iPhone packs a more powerful processor which is set to give you faster speeds overall in the device and include some new features as voice recording, internal compass, search, 3 megapixel camera and CallDAV support for calendars such as Google calendar for better syncing. Much awaited features such as Copy/paste, Video Recording,  MMS (Carrier dependent feature), Landscape keyboard and Internet Tethering to user your iPhone as a modem(again carrier dependent feature) are also include.  You can aslo get these features on your current iPhone with an update.
