The LG Revolution is the 3rd 4G LTE Phone in Verizon's lineup. Its a good phone that doesn't do much to stand out. Click inside for our full review

The LG Revolution made its big début at CES 2011 this past January and I’ve been waiting patiently to get my hands on this high-end LG android handset which is something new for LG to do for the U.S. Market as they usually tend to stay in the mid-rage when it comes to the U.S. but with the G2x and Revolution they are stepping it up. Let’s start off with the hardware.

Hardware

The LG Revolution isn’t a thin phone by any means. One of the first things you will notice is that it’s a bulky phone but as soon as you pick it up you will see the weight is evenly distributed and gives a comfortable feel in hand. The back has a nice soft touch coating that gives the overall feel of the device solid and premium. It comes with a 4.3 inch screen which is keeping up with the trend with 4G phones on Verizon. The screen is nice and crisp and will work for you but there are some angles where the screen will get washed out. About the screen is a 1.3 MP front facing camera a for video chat and a below the screen is your touch sensitive backlight buttons that are raised a bit higher from the bottom so you don’t accidently touch. On the side there is a chrome trimming where you will find a micro USB port, mini HDMI but not cable included which is always lame and volume controls. On the top with no trimming is a 3.5 MM headphone jack and power button with a microphone port on the bottom where there is no trimming as well. Internally you have a 1.0 Ghz processor that is a 2nd generation Snapdragon and is fast and smooth which you’ll see in our software and usability part of our review.

On the back you have a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video recording. 5 megapixel has become mid-range with today’s high end phones getting up to 8. With that being said the camera is good. It’s not great nor is it bad its very in the middle and good. We covered the camera extensively in our camera r review so be sure to check that out for more details. Behind the door cover there is 1500 mAh battery, 16 GB micro SD card and 4G LTE sim card. Good solid hardware here from LG.

Software & Usability

The LG Revolution comes with Android 2.2 with a custom interface that LG references as the UX or user experience. The UX is a middle of the road experience as it’s not to heavy on custom UI like HTC Sense but a bit lighter than Touch Wiz UI on Samsung devices. You get 7 home screens, custom LG widgets, a decent music player, customizable app drawer with grouping and lock screen with added functionality. The phone has Bing pre-installed in it which you may want to think about before grabbing but you can still download Google search and other standard Google apps on the phone through the android market it just won’t be as tightly integrated as Bing is on it.

The phone comes pre-installed with Netflix which works very will with the 4G connection. Movies download pretty fast and you can skip and track through the video at good speed without waiting too long for the buffer to catch up.Speaking of 4G speed the handset gets speed pretty well. Over the weekend I got an average of 6Mbps down and about 3Mbps up but once the weekday came it shot up to 10Mbps down and 6Mbps up which is ideal 4G speeds and makes web browsing fast and responsive with the standard android browser.

Battery life is disappointing. You do see improvements in battery life over past android devices but when you start to using it heavy you will be looking for a charger during the day. If your moderate or lite user you should be able to get through the day with a full charge. We’ve see other recent 4G android phones improved on battery and wish that LG would have done the same here.

Call quality is good for the most part. I was able to make calls without experience and dropped calls but the reception indicator seems look a bit off as there were times when it showed full bars one minute and then down to 1 or 2 the next in the same place. With either indicator I was able to connect and complete my call but a software fix for better accuracy looks needed. With audio people were able to hear me without too much trouble and I was able to hear them well on mid to mid high volume settings. If you go all the way up though there is a muffled sound that comes from it so you’ll want to keep that in mind. I did get a weird buzzing sound in some of my video recording while using a wireless mic which you will noticed in the video part of the review. it may have that same buzzing issue that GSM phones have but this is the only handset that’s happened with and it didn’t do it often enough for it to become a major issue during our review but its something you may want to keep any eye on for those that will get it for the long run. Beside that this is a good software set that create a solid user experience here from LG.

Overall

There isn’t too much of a “revolution” here from the LG Revolution. The handset does a lot of things that we have already seen on many other phones before it, especially in the 4G level of phones. Good hardware, software, call quality and camera but nothing is great. it stays right in the middle of the road and doesn’t try to veer off it. The phone is definitely one to consider in you choice of 4G phones but a lot of those other options do a better job of standing out.

Press Release

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
February 11, 2011 at 09.45 (CET+1)

London, UK – Nokia today outlined its new strategic direction, including changes in leadership and operational structure to accelerate the company’s speed of execution in a dynamic competitive environment.

Major elements of the new strategy include:

- Plans for a broad strategic partnership with Microsoft to build a new global mobile ecosystem; Windows Phone would serve as Nokia’s primary smartphone platform.
- A renewed approach to capture volume and value growth to connect "the next billion" to the Internet in developing growth markets
- Focused investments in next-generation disruptive technologies
- A new leadership team and organizational structure with a clear focus on speed, results and accountability

"Nokia is at a critical juncture, where significant change is necessary and inevitable in our journey forward," said Stephen Elop, Nokia President and CEO. "Today, we are accelerating that change through a new path, aimed at regaining our smartphone leadership, reinforcing our mobile device platform and realizing our investments in the future."

Nokia plans to form a strategic partnership with Microsoft to build a global mobile ecosystem based on highly complementary assets. The Nokia-Microsoft ecosystem targets to deliver differentiated and innovative products and have unrivalled scale, product breadth, geographical reach, and brand identity. With Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Nokia would help drive the future of the platform by leveraging its expertise on hardware optimization, software customization, language support and scale. Nokia and Microsoft would also combine services assets to drive innovation. Nokia Maps, for example, would be at the heart of key Microsoft assets like Bing and AdCenter, and Nokia’s application and content store would be integrated into Microsoft Marketplace. Under the proposed partnership, Microsoft would provide developer tools, making it easier for application developers to leverage Nokia’s global scale.

With Nokia’s planned move to Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Symbian becomes a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. This strategy recognizes the opportunity to retain and transition the installed base of 200 million Symbian owners. Nokia expects to sell approximately 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come.

Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year.

In feature phones, Nokia unveiled a renewed strategy to leverage its innovation and strength in growth markets to connect the next billion people to their first Internet and application experience.

New leadership team, operational structure
This new strategy is supported by significant changes in Nokia’s leadership, operational structure and approach. Effective today, Nokia has a new leadership team with the commitment, competencies and innovative thinking needed in today’s dynamic environment.

The Nokia Leadership Team, previously the Group Executive Board, will consist of the following members: Stephen Elop, Esko Aho, Juha Akras, Jerri DeVard, Colin Giles, Rich Green, Jo Harlow, Timo Ihamuotila, Mary McDowell, Kai Oistamo, Tero Ojanpera, Louise Pentland and Niklas Savander.

Alberto Torres has stepped down from the management team, effective February 10 to pursue other interests outside the company.

The renewed governance will expedite decision-making and improve time-to-market of products and innovations, placing a heavy focus on results, speed and accountability. The new strategy and operational structure are expected to have significant impact to Nokia operations and personnel.

New company structure
As of April 1, Nokia will have a new company structure, which features two distinct business units: Smart Devices and Mobile Phones. They will focus on Nokia’s key business areas: high-end smartphones and mass-market mobile phones. Each unit will have profit-and-loss responsibility and end-to-end accountability for the full consumer experience, including product development, product management and product marketing.

Smart Devices will be responsible for building Nokia’s leadership in smartphones and will be led by Jo Harlow. The following sub-units now in Mobile Solutions will move under Smart Devices:
- Symbian Smartphones
- MeeGo Computers
- Strategic Business Operations

To support the planned new partnership with Microsoft, Smart Devices will be responsible for creating a winning Windows Phone portfolio.

Mobile Phones will drive Nokia’s "web for the next billion" strategy. Mobile Phones will leverage its innovation and strength in growth markets to connect the next billion people and bring them affordable access to the Internet and applications. The Mobile Phones unit will be led by Mary McDowell.

Markets will be responsible for selling products, executing compelling marketing and communications, creating a competitive local ecosystem, sourcing, customer care, manufacturing, IT and logistics across all Nokia products. It will be headed by Niklas Savander.

Services and Developer Experience will be responsible for Nokia’s global services portfolio, developer offering, developer relations and integration of partner service offerings. Tero Ojanpera will lead the Services and Developer Experience unit in an acting capacity.

NAVTEQ, an integral part of Nokia’s location and advertising business, will be headed by Larry Kaplan, and continue as a separate reporting entity.

The CTO Office will be responsible for Nokia’s technology strategy and forward-looking technology activities, including Nokia Research Center. It will be headed by Rich Green.

Design, responsible for Nokia product and user experience design, will be led by Marko Ahtisaari.

The CFO Office, responsible for all financial activity, will be headed by Timo Ihamuotila.

Corporate Development, responsible for driving implementation of Nokia’s ecosystem strategy and strategic partnerships, will be headed by Kai Oistamo.

Corporate Relations & Responsibility, responsible for Nokia’s government and public affairs, sustainable development and social responsibility, will be led by Esko Aho.

Human Resources will be led by Juha Akras.

Legal and Intellectual Property will be led by Louise Pentland.

Nokia Siemens Networks continues in the Nokia Group as a separate reporting entity.

Product Description

***Availability: Ships with a 7 week lead time.***
The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer is a breakthrough in 3D printing technology. We’ve named it the Thing-O-Matic because it is an automatic 3D printer. All other 3D printers can only do one thing at a time while the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer prints thing after thing! Buy it, put it together and enjoy being the first on your block to live in the cutting-edge personal manufacturing future of tomorrow!
Fully Automatic
The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer comes with a new larger MakerBot Automated Build Platform v2.0 that will keep printing and printing… Automatically!
The MakerBot Automated Build Platform is truly a revolution in 3D printing. Updated to be larger for the Thing-O-Matic, it allows you to have a print queue where your machine will clear the build surface between builds by printing, then ejecting. It prints objects one after another, turning your MakerBot into a little high-production factory that sits on your desktop. Best of all, this is completely automated: you hit print, and the machine does all the work. Want to print 100 butterflies? Easy. Want to print an entire chess set? No problem. Want to start a business selling printed things that you’ve designed? Awesome. Have the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer do all the work while you design new things.
Extremely Reliable
The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer comes with the MakerBot MK5 plastruder which will give you thousands of hours of trouble-free printing.
We’ve invested many hours into designing, testing, and tweaking the MK5 plastruder. The result is an extruder that is extremely reliable, and very simple to maintain. The hot end on this extruder is essentially unbreakable and the filament drive system is one of the strongest on the market. We’ve run this thing for more than a thousand hours with minimal maintenance. Changing the filament is a breeze with the filament pressure thumb screw. You can even hot-swap the filament mid-print!
Higher Quality
We’ve completely overhauled the drive system to give the optimum positioning accuracy. The entire system has been upgraded to sturdy 3/8″ diameter linear shafting, which is overkill, but you can trust that the axes will be sturdy and straight. We’ve also switched to self-aligning, sintered brass bearings. These are very forgiving to DIY assembly and provide a nice, smooth motion on the steel shafts. Last, but not least we’ve completely replaced the Z axis with a stepper driven, cantilevered stage. Guided by two of the linear shafts, this completely eliminates any Z wobble and results in nicely aligned layers. Using a high-angle lead screw, we were able to increase the speed of the Z axis from 150mm/minute to 1000mm/minute. That’s more than 6 times the speed! This means the layer changes are almost completely imperceptible and blobbing is significantly reduced for smoother prints.
Easier to Use
Connect to the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer over USB and hit print—the machine will self-detect its position and start printing!
The new MakerBot Gen4 Electronics have been designed to make the printing experience easier than ever. The motherboard now sports an integrated USB port, so you simply plug the MakerBot in with a standard USB cable. We’ve also added full endstop support so that you never need to touch the XYZ axes ever again. When you hit print, the MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer will automatically home itself, heat up, and begin printing. All you have to do is sit back and relax while your MakerBot does all the work. Living in the future is awesome. Oh yeah, and the electronics are all inside, so you don’t have wires dangling everywhere. This also makes travelling on the subway with your MakerBot stress-free.
The MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer kit is available for $1225 and has a 7 week lead time. Order a MakerBot Thing-O-Matic 3D printer and get the latest in personal manufacturing technology!
The bundle includes New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii and a new red Wii Remote Plus controller, in addition to all the other included items, like Wii Sports™ and a red Nunchuk™ controller. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $199.99.
Red Nintendo DSi XL Bundle: This special-edition Nintendo DSi XL bundle is also red in honor of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. and features three iconic Super Mario Bros.-themed graphics. The bundle comes with Mario Kart™ DS, which looks gorgeous on the extra-large screen. That’s in addition to the pre-loaded software of Brain Age™ Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math and Photo Clock. It will be available while supplies last at a suggested retail price of just $179.99.
Wii Remote Plus: This new controller combines the original, iconic Wii Remote™ controller with built-in Wii MotionPlus functionality. The compact Wii Remote Plus controller offers players precision motion controls all in one unit. It becomes the new standard Wii controller, and will be available from now on in all Wii hardware packages and bundles, as well as sold separately at a suggested retail price of $39.99.
FlingSmash™ Bundle: The new Wii game combines the hands-on fun of tennis with the nonstop action and instant gratification of pinball.
